Toys for Tots

through Friday, December 15

For the past twenty-three years, Sun City Summerlin has taken part in this nationwide campaign promoted by the U.S. Marine Corps.  This toy drive benefits needy children here in Las Vegas.  Sun City Summerlin residents and employees have participated each year to help this wonderful cause and have donated thousands of gifts.  If you would like to take part in this year's Toys for Tots drive, you can drop off a new, unwrapped toy now through Friday, December 15, at Mountain Shadows, Desert Vista, Sun Shadows or Pinnacle Community Centers.  When you begin your holiday shopping this year, think about picking up a little something extra for a needy child.  Thank you.

Come and ring in the 2018 New Year at The Summit with the sounds of Las Vegas' own high energy six-piece band The Experiment playing your favorite pop, disco, 70s and 80s classic rock, Motown, soul, and country dance music.  The view of the Las Vegas Strip's fireworks from the private patio is spectacular!  Come and enjoy tempting hors d'oeuvres prepared by The Summit staff, delectable desserts and a champagne toast at midnight.  A cash bar will be available.  Free photo booth available from 9:30 - 11:30 p.m.  Space is limited to 80 guests, so get your tickets early.  Seating is "first come, first served."

Tucked away in the Sonoran Desert of southern California, Palm Springs is known for its stylish hotels, golf courses and its many fine examples of midcentury-modern architecture.  The core shopping district along Palm Canyon Drive features vintage boutiques, interior design shops and restaurants.  Its Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the largest rotating aerial tramway in the world.  Declared an historic site in 1990, Sunnylands has been the vacation site of numerous celebrities and public officials and is often regarded as the "Camp David of the West."  The 17,000-square-foot Sunnylands Center is surrounded by nine acres of desert gardens.  Designed by landscape architect James Burnett, the gardens include more than 53,000 individual plants.

12:30 pm - Arrive downtown Palm Springs, shopping and lunch (on your own)

4:30 pm - Depart downtown for Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

5:00 pm - Ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tram, dinner at the Pines Cafe (included)

Santa Anita Racetrack & The Huntington Library Getaway

Located in Los Angeles County, Santa Anita Park is the premier destination for live horse racing and betting.  Club House guests enjoy great views of the track's first turn, complete wagering services and access to Box Seat area, FrontRunner, Club House Terrace, Turf Terrace and dining overlooking the track, or Sierra Vista's attractive indoor setting.  The Huntington Library collection includes more than seven million manuscripts, 420,000 rare books and 1.3 million photographs, prints and ephemera.  You'll be able to view some of the finest rare books and manuscripts of Anglo-American civilization, including the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, a Gutenberg Bible on vellum, the double-elephant folio edition of Audubon's Birds of America, and a world-class collection of the early editions of Shakespeare's works.  The 120-acre Botanical Gardens contain more than a dozen principal garden areas. Among the most remarkable are the Desert Garden, the Japanese Garden, the Rose Garden, and the Chinese Garden. The camellia collection is one of the largest in the country.

Death Valley Day Trip

In this below-sea-level basin, steady drought and record summer heat make Death Valley a land of extremes.  Yet, each extreme has a striking contrast.  Towering peaks are frosted with winter snow.  Rare rainstorms bring vast fields of wildflowers.  Lush oases harbor tiny fish and refuge for wildlife and humans. Despite its name, a great diversity of life survives in Death Valley.  Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.  Average high temperatures in February are about 75 degrees.

Creech Air Force Base Tour

Creech Air Force Base, Nevada was established in the aftermath of the devastating December 7, 1941 aerial attack on Pearl Harbor.  Initially a "tent city" military training camp, in March 1942 efforts began to construct more permanent facilities.  In the seven decades since, the installation's tradition and missions have continued to focus on answering the first call to duty - preparing Airmen for direct combat and support in service to the nation.  Due to the strict requirements for entry, full name, date of birth and Social Security number for each participant is required.  All guests will be required to show a valid government or military ID upon entrance to the base.  Tickets on sale at Desert Vista community center only.  Please bring your ticket, after purchase, to the Community Services office to complete the necessary information form.
